On Monday March 16th, the Aviation Club of The Villages sponsored a Fly Out to New Smyrna Beach Municipal Airport to tour American Aero Services (AAS). AAS is actually located on the Southwest corner of the airport in New Smyrna. Pilots and passengers arrived at the airport around 10:00 AM and were greeted by members of AAS. AAS specializes in restoration of WWII planes. Participants were treated with an exception tour where we were able to view restoration in process on many planes from the era. Planes included B-17, B-24, B-25, PBY, and several additional aircraft. One plane to note was a restoration of a German Heinkel-111. This plane was shot down during an early period of WWII in Sweden. The organization was able to negotiate acquiring the broken pieces of the plane, bringing the pieces back to Florida, where the meticulous process of restoration began. The team at AAS believes the plane will be airworthy in a year. The AAS team is contracted by several organizations to restore planes. The team searches the world for parts, in some cases remanufactures parts, and may contract with additional companies for repair works. The Club was impressed with AAS’s commitment to restore these planes back to their original condition.

A must stop for any WW II military aviation enthusiast. This gem is the real deal - no Disney CGI here. It's history with all the sights and smells of a working hanger - which it is. While museum section chock full of unique military artifacts (many donated - be sure to check to out the original nose art photos) the real "treasures" are found in the hangers themselves. There were a number of WW II-era planes being worked on while we were there - Texan, B-17, B-25, 2 P-51s, P-40, PBY, Avenger, and an ultra-rare Japanese N1K1 "Rex" that was patiently awaiting restoration. Visitors are free to walk around and explore as they see fit --- there is no prescribed canned tour or roped off areas. The technicians working were super friendly and willing to chat about what specific work was being carried out or sharing some specific history on the aircraft themselves. I only wish I they had some merchandise for sale -- I would have definitely repped an American Aero Services t-shirt this summer :) I will head back for another visit when I am in the area again because you never know what might be in for servicing.

On 4 June 2026 I got to see them test fly a P-51 Mustang. They've also got B-17, a B-24, and a PBY Catalina amongst other projects.

Picked up some parts for a friend. Ashley came in on his own time to assist me. I got a tour of the facility and got to see some vintage aircraft. Ashley is a wealth of knowledge. I will stop by the next time I'm in the area to see the awesome stuff they are working on.
